Mid Winter Lunch Blues...

Laptop Lunches
I've got a preschooler who only eats lunch at school one to two times per week, and I have a hard time thinking of creative lunch ideas.  I can't imagine what it will be like when it's five days a week like many of you are already experiencing.  We use a Laptop Lunch System which gives us incentive to steer away from packaged foods and I can toss anything in there from fresh fruit (without getting smooshed) to leftovers, but I have a feeling that her teachers don't love warming it up for her.  So, we usually resort to a PB&J or turkey sandwich on the Goldfish shaped flatbread (kind of pricey, not sure of it's worth it, but fun to look at nonetheless).  In an effort to keep her plenty hydrated, I fill her Lifefactory Bottle with water.  It was a baby bottle at one time, but they have flat and sippy caps available to take the bottles to the next stage... So sustainable!

Lifefactory Bottle
Just as I was having this feeling of monotony, I came across Laptop Lunches' Facebook page where they had just shared an article from healthy Child Healthy World entitled "28 Tips to Snap Out of a School Lunch Slump" that offered some really great ideas to keep lunch interesting, as much for you as for your child(ren).  The article features a great video from mom-moderated site Weelicious, who also has a big presence on Facebook.  She posts tons of yummy recipes and videos of herself packing her son's lunch every day, if you're into that.

From Funky Lunch
The suggestion to "make lunch on a stick" really spoke to me, for whatever reason... I do love a shish-kebab.... Chicken and pineapple?  Yum!  It was also suggested to simply change up the packaging.  I already include a cloth napkin in the lunchbox, but maybe I will try wrapping her sandwich with it next time.

I also think that letting her participate is helpful in assuring that she actually eats what is in the lunch box.  Fun shapes always help too... I have an arsenal of cookie cutters that I use, but check this sammie out!  I'm not sure how well it would travel, but it sure iscute!

***GIVEAWAY***

What are some of your favorite things to pack in your child's lunch, and what do you do to make sure they actually eat it?  Share your thoughts and/or ideas with us and be entered to win your choice of one of the lunch boxes (or systems) that we carry here at the treehouse.  The winner will be chosen on Friday, January 20th at 2 pm!

Winner must redeem prize within 30 days... In-stock only... Good luck!

Stay active with toys from K.D.'s treehouse!

Stay active  with toys from K.D.'s treehouse!

After two big events last week here on Devine Street and at the treehouse, we are ready for a little reprieve.  Thanks to everyone who came out a supported us and our fellow Devine Street businesses!

With new shipments arriving daily, we have been going non-stop!  Now that our PlanToys have arrived, we are complete and the treehouse is jam packed with great eco-friendly gift options for everyone on your list in all different price ranges!

Here are a few suggestions for the active children on your list...

Crisscrosses, can-cans and double-unders are all good for the planet when they are done with the Green Toy Jump Rope made from recycled plastic and all cotton rope. Manufactured in the U.S.A. from 100% recycled plastic milk containers, happy jumpers will burn energy while saving energy and greenhouse gas emissions.  In the same fashion, check out the Green Toy's Eco-Saucer!

Little walkers can take this wooden Wonder Walker from Educo which looks as good as it is durable.  This balanced walker provides a sturdy base for pulling up, and a unique design that makes pushing a breeze.  Maneuverable knobs, wheels and colorful balls turn it into a busy-box on wheels.

If you've ever visited the treehouse, you know how the kids cannot stay off of the PlanToys Scooter, which just goes to show you how well-constructed it is... It has been loved on for nearly three years, and is still going strong!  This 5-wheeled scooter is equipped with non-slip pedals and 3-level adjustable handlebar, and is suitable for ages 3 and up.  ONLY ONE LEFT IN STOCK!!!

Especially with the glorious weather we've been having, consider the PlanToys Croquet Set.   This family favorite has a very friendly design with bright colors and can be played in several adjustable settings to accommodate a multitude of ages and skill levels.  Includes 2 mullets, 4 wooden balls, 4 colorful wickets and 4 wooden wicket stands.

And don't forget the active moms & dads...

The Mountain Buggy Terrain is a jogger's dream.  Maximum control and maximum performance, this sleek buggy is equipped with these killer features:

  • light aluminium frame - 13.5kg / 29lb
  • wheel base - 63cm / 25in
  • brake - hand brake & foot park brake
  • canopy with sun visor - follow the sun
  • handle height - 86-118cm / 24-46in
  • tires - 16"
  • suspension - shock absorbing
  • tracking device

COMING SOON to the treehouse...

The Freerider Buggy Board is perfect for older siblings to ride along in a very cool way.  For use on its own, or with the purchase of a special connector, the Freerider is compatible with all Phil & Teds buggies, the BOB Revolution SE, the Baby Jogger City Mini and a few others.  Limited quantities will be available, but feel free to call the shop for details!

Gift Ideas for the Creative Child!

Encourage use of imagination with toys from K.D.'s treehouse!

We love, love, LOVE toys that do not require batteries.  Not only do they have a more classic feel, but they are often made from sustainable materials like rubberwood, maple or in some cases recycled materials like milk jugs... Hooray for lessening our footprint on the earth!

The toys we offer at K.D.'s treehouse are all non-toxic and thoughtfully selected for their durability and eco-friendliness.  Plus, they are either manufactured right here in the USA or in a fair trade facility overseas, which is always something we strive for.

And quite the selection we have, especially for the creative, free-spirited child who isn't afraid to use his or her imagination... Here are some of our favorites!

For the Urban Planner in training...

The large Hape Sunshine Doll House is made of natural and sustainable materials such as birch plywood and bamboo. The beautiful bamboo floor gives the house a unique, modern feel. To save energy, the house boasts a fully functional solar panel to recharge the batteries that operate the LED lights. The Hape Bamboo Sunshine Doll House and furniture collection is the first to offer children materials combined with contemporary design and modern technology... When can we move in?!

An edition of a classic toy block set, PlanToys' Creative Blocks are designed to encourage and enhance children’s imagination... Super sturdy and perfectly sustainable, made using chemical free, kiln-dried recycled rubber wood and designed with water based non-toxic colors as accent.

PlanToys' Eco Town is a place where children can build a world of the future. By providing clean transportation, sustainable energy and homes, this play set gives children the tools they need to plan and play in a town that will have a positive impact on our environment. The Eco Town helps children develop logical thinking and planning skills, and stimulates their minds with fresh new ideas.  Eco-Town consists of an Eco Home, Eco Train Station, Eco Charging Station, Eco Street Accessories, Eco Play Mat and several road and rail track pieces, all sold separately.

For the Budding Chef...

The all in one Kitchen Center from PlanToys has turning knobs and comes with oven, storage area, sink, dishwashing unit, and cooking utensils holder. This set offers two-sided play for realistic role-play experiences, and is the perfect fit for small spaces!

Delicioso!  With the Green Toys Pizza Parlor, pizza lovers can pretend and play chef and server by taking orders, creating custom pizzas and serving guests. This colorful 27-piece set features four slices that can be stacked with toppings galore to dish up any personal pie. Each realistic part is made in the USA from food-safe 100% recycled plastic milk containers that saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Plus, each pizza ingredient is interchangeable with other Green Toys stacking play food products and fits on Green Toys kitchen sets.

Whip up some creative play, with the Whip-It-Up Mixer from Educo! Turn the handle to make the beater spin; lift the arm and remove the mixing bowl. Timeless wood quality. This toy mixer will inspire hours of hands-on, role play fun. Includes cloth bags of flour and brown sugar... Bonus!

For the Explorer...

The Hape Stormy Seas boat is ready to be loaded with cargo... Heads up! the loads and boxes must be balanced equally on the boat because the valuable cargo can go overboard if the seas become rough!  Great for siblings!

This fanciful Treehouse by Plan Toys has 3 levels on its trunk of curved plywood. The top level has a canvas canopy covering a living area with a table and chairs. There is a working pulley and pallet to hoist objects to the upper levels. The tree house set includes a table, 2 chairs, a bucket, a rope ladder, a swing, and 2 figures.

The Educo Discovery Spaceship & Lift Off Rocket provide the fuel for imaginative explorations as children prepare, launch or arrive at their destination somewhere in the galaxy, and the top of the rocket can become a landing module!

Give thanks to your child's teacher...

Thanksgiving has come and gone...

Too fast, in  my humble opinion, but I am still stuffed.  In a good way.  And just in the nick of time, the weather has turned brisk and gloomy, just as the pending days of winter should be.  It's beginning to look (and feel) a lot like Christmas.  The decorations are up at the treehouse... We were eager beavers, and patiently waited until the clock struck midnight on Thanksgiving to bust out the holiday decor.  We wanted to celebrate and give Thanks, and not rush it, you know?

Before you know it, the kids will be off for the holidays, but before you sit in your last (for the time being) carpool line you might want to read on for some great Teacher Gift ideas.  They always deserve a little something to let them know that you are thinking about them and appreciate all they do this holiday season.

We can't keep these Lifefactory Glass Beverage Bottles in stock... Unique, substantial and shatter-resistant, whomever you gift one to will never want to drink out of plastic or stainless steel again!

The Kids in the Kitchen Cookbook was created and donated to St. Lawrence Place by Young Chef's Academy.  Recipes include kid-friendly favorites from SLP residents, staff, and supporters, as well as recipes from local restaurants, such as Blue Marlin's Shrimp & Grits and Cafe Strudel Chicken Salad.  The pictures were taken by local photographer, Ryan Musick, and are of children who have lived at SLP, and of SLP staff and supporters in the kitchen with their own children, and the cover art was donated by local artist Roger Hutchison, a long-time SLP supporter.  All proceeds from the sale of these cookbooks go to St. Lawrence Place.

You can't go wrong with something from our collection of Local Art.  From jewelry and stationery from Birdies by Shayna to Kris Neely's Guardian Angels on reclaimed wood to something fabulous from Nana by Sally (her diaper & wipes cases are actually the perfect for for an iPad, hint hint) you are sure to find the perfect gift, whatever your price range.

Not only is local musician Adam Cross easy on the eyes, but he's talented too.  His newly debuted CD Sirens is available at the treehouse, where he will also be playing live on the front porch on Devine Night Out December 8th.

Give back with an Epworth Children's Home Gift Card in the teacher's name.  Contributing to the Epworth Giving Tree sends one (or more) children on a fun outing over the holiday break while we're home enjoying our families.  Gift Cards available in $7, $12 and $25 denominations.

Something homemade works well too... But if you're not feeling crafty, or simply don't have the time, then pop into the treehouse and let us help you... See you soon!

We're giving away a copy of the Kids in the Kitchen Cookbook to one of our readers ($10 value)... Comment below with your best Thanksgiving culinary mishap... The story that makes us laugh the loudest will be announced this Friday (12/4) at 2 pm!
