Mid Winter Lunch Blues...

Laptop Lunches

I've got a preschooler who only eats lunch at school one to two times per week, and I have a hard time thinking of creative lunch ideas. I can't imagine what it will be like when it's five days a week like many of you are already experiencing. We use a Laptop Lunch System which gives us incentive to steer away from packaged foods and I can toss anything in there from fresh fruit (without getting smooshed) to leftovers, but I have a feeling that her teachers don't love warming it up for her. So, we usually resort to a PB&J or turkey sandwich on the Goldfish shaped flatbread (kind of pricey, not sure of it's worth it, but fun to look at nonetheless). In an effort to keep her plenty hydrated, I fill her Lifefactory Bottle with water. It was a baby bottle at one time, but they have flat and sippy caps available to take the bottles to the next stage... So sustainable!

Just as I was having this feeling of monotony, I came across Laptop Lunches' Facebook page where they had just shared an article from healthy Child Healthy World entitled "28 Tips to Snap Out of a School Lunch Slump" that offered some really great ideas to keep lunch interesting, as much for you as for your child(ren). The article features a great video from mom-moderated site Weelicious, who also has a big presence on Facebook. She posts tons of yummy recipes and videos of herself packing her son's lunch every day, if you're into that.

The suggestion to "make lunch on a stick" really spoke to me, for whatever reason... I do love a shish-kebab.... Chicken and pineapple? Yum! It was also suggested to simply change up the packaging. I already include a cloth napkin in the lunchbox, but maybe I will try wrapping her sandwich with it next time.

I also think that letting her participate is helpful in assuring that she actually eats what is in the lunch box. Fun shapes always help too... I have an arsenal of cookie cutters that I use, but check this sammie out! I'm not sure how well it would travel, but it sure iscute!

After two big events last week here on Devine Street and at the treehouse, we are ready for a little reprieve. Thanks to everyone who came out a supported us and our fellow Devine Street businesses!

Thanksgiving has come and gone...

Too fast, in my humble opinion, but I am still stuffed. In a good way. And just in the nick of time, the weather has turned brisk and gloomy, just as the pending days of winter should be. It's beginning to look (and feel) a lot like Christmas. The decorations are up at the treehouse... We were eager beavers, and patiently waited until the clock struck midnight on Thanksgiving to bust out the holiday decor. We wanted to celebrate and give Thanks, and not rush it, you know?

Before you know it, the kids will be off for the holidays, but before you sit in your last (for the time being) carpool line you might want to read on for some great Teacher Gift ideas. They always deserve a little something to let them know that you are thinking about them and appreciate all they do this holiday season.

We can't keep these Lifefactory Glass Beverage Bottles in stock... Unique, substantial and shatter-resistant, whomever you gift one to will never want to drink out of plastic or stainless steel again!

The Kids in the Kitchen Cookbook was created and donated to St. Lawrence Place by Young Chef's Academy. Recipes include kid-friendly favorites from SLP residents, staff, and supporters, as well as recipes from local restaurants, such as Blue Marlin's Shrimp & Grits and Cafe Strudel Chicken Salad. The pictures were taken by local photographer, Ryan Musick, and are of children who have lived at SLP, and of SLP staff and supporters in the kitchen with their own children, and the cover art was donated by local artist Roger Hutchison, a long-time SLP supporter. All proceeds from the sale of these cookbooks go to St. Lawrence Place.

You can't go wrong with something from our collection of Local Art. From jewelry and stationery from Birdies by Shayna to Kris Neely's Guardian Angels on reclaimed wood to something fabulous from Nana by Sally (her diaper & wipes cases are actually the perfect for for an iPad, hint hint) you are sure to find the perfect gift, whatever your price range.

Not only is local musician Adam Cross easy on the eyes, but he's talented too. His newly debuted CD Sirens is available at the treehouse, where he will also be playing live on the front porch on Devine Night Out December 8th.

Give back with an Epworth Children's Home Gift Card in the teacher's name. Contributing to the Epworth Giving Tree sends one (or more) children on a fun outing over the holiday break while we're home enjoying our families. Gift Cards available in $7, $12 and $25 denominations.

We would like to take a moment to wish all of our customers, who are more like friends, a very Happy Thanksgiving! This is our favorite time of year, and an opportunity to reflect on all that we have been blessed with... A beautiful new location, loyal customers, wonderful friends and wonderfully crazy family.

If you will be travelling out of town, please be safe getting to your destination. If you will be in the Midlands, be sure to stay tuned for next week's blog with details for our GREEN FRIDAY specials, which we will also send out in an e-mail. Facebook is also a great way to stay in touch and find out what's new at the treehouse... We have some good stuff up our sleeves! Just to whet your palate, hand-knit rattles from Yellow Label, infant carriers from Baby K'Tan and art supplies from Eco Kids all arrived just as I was sitting here typing this blog entry! We found the Baby K'tan after Boba restructured to improve their collection... While they are on hiatus (they'll be back in the New Year, thank goodness), we thought we'd try this easy-peasy take on the wrap-style carrier... No wrapping required!

Just in time for the holidays, we are giving away a USA made arts & crafts set from Eco-Kids out of Portland, ME. A $42 value, this set would be great to break out for the kids while you slave away over Thanksgiving Dinner. Or save it for Christmas or Hanukkah. Leaves are turning...
Temperature is dropping...

We are happy ladies at the treehouse! It is perfect weather for enjoying our morning coffee on the porch, but perhaps a little windy for lunch... The colder weather is coming y'all, and as much as I want to wear flip flops every day, it is time to think about getting cozy.

When I think about getting cozy, warm pajamas, coats and hats come to mind. Now is the time to transition into long sleeves and we have a bunch of super soft organic cotton footie and long john-style pajamas from Kate Quinn Organics, Garden Kids and Green Kids. Pajamas are a great way to introduce organic cotton into your child's wardrobe. Since you spend so much time in your pajamas, supreme quality is essential. Organic cotton is great for sensitive skin and totally worth it.

We are also well stocked with Frugi Snuggle Fleeces, and I am just in love with the stars print. All of the prints are great , but stars are something you don't see as often. We also got an adorable corduroy Toggle Coat in from Kate Quinn!

If you're looking for something special, Kate from Tot Toppers (one of our consignment artists) recently unloaded a batch of hand knit hats... How stinkin' cute?! We don't have the dino hat in this exact color scheme, but we have others and you will love them all!

As you prepare for the cooler weather, you might consider some of these great tips for conserving energy in the Fall and Winter months.

Seal any leaks with insulation, caulking, weather stripping, and door snakes.

If your attic isn’t insulated, make sure to insulate the entrance so the cold doesn’t seep into your house from above.

Install ceiling fans and set them clockwise in winter, to help push warmer air down where you can enjoy it.

Set your thermostat to 65 F or lower, and wear layers of warm cotton clothing in dark colors that absorb light and heat.

Consider investing in a programmable thermostat that fulfills heating needs around your schedule. You set it so the heat kicks on for a specified amount of time before you arrive home or before you get up in the mornings.

Better yet, invite all of your friends over and have a winter gala. Rumor has it that each guest is the equivalent of a 175-watt heater. The more the merrier—and toastier!

We're ready... Are you???

Halloween is when things start to go downhill at the treehouse... The candy comes out, and doesn't go away until after the holidays. And none of us have the willpower to assure that things go any other way. If you've been in the last couple of weeks, you may have come across a festive pumpkin bowl full of candy corn, or M&M's or... Yeah. It's just "that time of year," and we go with it... It's for the kids.

We love halloween at the treehouse and are are super duper excited to finally get to be a stop on the Incarnation CDC's Spooky Walk because we're on their side of the street.

We have already carved our first pumpkin at home (thanks Trenholm United Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch), and painted one for the preschool classroom... Now, that is smart! But, if you're like me and have already carved your pumpkin, you might be interested in these ideas before you have to to peel the ooey gooey rotten pumpkin off your front porch like I did:

Cook the fleshy innards just like you would any winter squash, and then make muffins or a pie. I recently saw a mac 'n cheese recipe that used pumpkin... YUM!
Slow roast the seeds with a simple dash of sea salt
Use the shell(s) as a planter or as festive serving bowls for a hearty soup (bake them first at 350 for 35 minutes if you plan on trying this one)... Throw them in the compost pile after you're done!

Kiddie costumes are ready to go... A witch for trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, and a "less scary," yet kind-of-cliche cat for the Fall Festival at school. It's actually the same costume from the neck down, minus the tail because I'm frugal like that. I'm not such a fan of dressing up so I probably won't, but if you are planning to, I did run across these fun ideas on Cool Mom Picks for you babywearing mamas. I'm partial to the lobster... Which one do you like? Aside: Do you know about Cool Mom Picks? You should... We get a lot of ideas from them, and they often feature the fantastic products we carry in the store! Great minds think alike!

And that's just what they'll do!

There's no denying that barefoot is best for your little ones' feet. It enables their feet to grown unrestricted and get a good grip on the floor beneath them... And it's so comfortable! Even I like to walk around barefoot, or in my sherpa-lined slippers, but those aren't for outside of the house.

However, as the weather cools off shoes become somewhat of a necessity for little walkers, and a fashion statement for the wee ones... Sometimes things are totally unnecessary but so hard to resist. Shoes for babies definitely fall into that category.

We do not intend to be a "shoe store," but after not being able to find the funky shoes we love for our own children in Columbia, we decided to pick up a couple of very special collections... And with good reason.

Livie & Luca Buck in Fuchsia

Livie & Luca is about giving back. The owner believes in creating a better world for our children and partners with customers and Art for Humanity (artforhumnanity.org) to facilitate the donation of gently-worn shoes to children in Honduras. You can actually send back your gently worn shoes and they send them on. Children living in poverty are given possibly their first pair of shoes for school and protection from soil-borne infections caused by walking barefoot.

Livie & Luca is about sustainability. Whenever they can, Livie & Luca incorporates sustainable and eco-friendly practices to tread lightly on the earth. They are committed to social responsibility and chose our materials and providers carefully, making efforts to work with companies that use no harmful chemicals in their leather tanning process, for example.

Livie & Luca is about handmade. Their baby and toddler shoes are made by hand and they take great pride in their artisanship, from the design, to materials, to construction. Chooze Scout in Peaceout

The other shoe we brought in is a brand new company, aptly named Chooze. These funky little mismatched shoes are available in both toddler and youth sizes. Chooze uses only vegan materials in their manufacturing and packaging made from recycled materials.

At the end of each year, Chooze invests 100% of their profits into anti-poverty programs. These programs provide training, support, education and loans to women for them to start their own businesses and lift themselves out of very extreme poverty. The loans are paid back after one year, and the cycle starts all over again.

So, as you purchase shoes for your (or someone else's) child this Fall, consider a pair with a purpose.

We moved!!!

This past weekend was our "official" Grand Opening... Lunch Money played and we saw lots of faces, young and old, familiar and new... What a great time! Thanks to everyone who participated!

We love our new home. The porch is perfect for sipping coffee on a cool morning, having a meeting, thinking... having lunch. You should join us sometime!

Another great thing about this place, besides the cool vibe and extra square footage (hooray for an office that isn't in the storage room) is our Community Room. We've always thought that having a little space for classes, meetings and whatnot would be so fun.

We've already got a few things in place, and we're working on more, so if you have any ideas, please feel free to share!

On Wednesdays at 10 am starting October 12th, we will have Storytime at the treehouse! We tried a Mommy's Morning Out last year but found that a lot of you want to be out with your little ones, so we thought we'd try something more child-focused. Our tenderhearted Kimi will be heading that up. You and your little ones will love her, so make plans to attend!

In this course, guide Mary Nash will take you beyond the surface appearance of your exterior body and delve deeply into your inner core. It is the inner sanctum that long ago was broken or wounded, thus requiring an exterior shield of armor. The shield is a great gift, keeping us safe and soothed, but with this shield often comes immense suffering.

Through guided meditation, awareness practice (including education about the true nutritional needs of the body), written inquiry and compassionate support, we will unravel the mystery to whatever keeps us stuck in the cycle of suffering through weight gain. Participants will learn to listen to the wisdom in their bodies, shift beliefs and attitudes about the world and themselves, watch their exterior selves become a true reflection of inner beauty. This course is not about managing calories, diet or exercise, it is a course about looking within both deeply and truthfully, and finding grace.

Feeling hot hot HOT!

Let's skip the small talk... We all know how hot it is out there, and as much fun as outdoor activities are, we are all much happier indoors... In the air conditioning. Unless there is a pool or ocean involved.

We have been busy at the treehouse placing our Fall orders. Just as you can imagine, it is hard to consider long sleeves and corduroys when it is 100 degrees outside. But orders are placed and we think that you will be very pleased... So be on the lookout for some adorable eco-friendly threads for your adorable children or grandchildren, or nieces or nephews... Or friends. We don't discriminate. And don't forget, we are now going up to a size 14!

In addition to clothing, we are expanding our selection of non-toxic waste-free lunchboxes. Joining longtime favorite, Laptop Lunches, will be Goodbyn and OOTS... There will be something for everyone in a multitude of price points.

We are also bringing in lovely, uber-sturdy backpacks from Beatrix New York. You can be sure the coat hooks at school will not be adorned with these unique, PVC, lead and phthalate free bags... These have a patch where you can write your child's name in, or maybe Judy down at Private P.O. can monogram it for you, if you're into that. We only ordered one of each design, so if there is a particular design that your child is absolutely gaga over, we are taking pre-orders with a credit card!

Ahhhhhhhh...

We are really enjoying summer at the treehouse. Sleeping in. Swimming. Beach trips. Iced coffee and ice cream... How have you been spending your summer?

Many of you with children that have outgrown a lot of our clothing have been asking where you can find well-made, comfortable, eco-friendly clothing in bigger sizes... And we think we've found the answer!

Sustainable Kids is a label that caters to a hip crowd of growing children... They manufacture all of their garments right here in the US and participate in a really neat donation program. When you purchase a piece of their clothing, either for your child or as a gift, you can opt to add a donation box to be filled with toiletries or other needed items for children at the the Open Door Haiti School... The school at Open Door Haiti educates over 300 children grades K-6, provides daily meals and is open 365 days a year.

We are loving the sunshine at the treehouse!

Have you been in lately to check out all of our new spring goodies??? Our designers seem to operate on different timelines than us here in the Deep South... They didn't understand our need for light weight fabrics, shorts and short sleeves so early in the season because they are located on the West Coast, in Boston or as far away as England. As far as they know, Spring is still a day away! Well, we promise, their collections have been worth the wait... Bright, fun organic cottons that are Made in the USA or fair trade in India... We can't say enough good things!

One of our favorites has been the simple graphic tees from Kate Quinn Organics, available in Octopus, Lion and Elephant designs (shown left). We are also digging the printed polos (shown above), kimono bodysuits and sun dresses from newcomer, My Little Pakora... The "Flutter" poplin dress is available in a sweet skye blue in addition to white, and is perfect for our climate!

Reduce Reuse Recycle

There are a lot of ways to "be green." Buying organic and local are simple choices to lighten your footprint... Choosing organic minimizes the pesticides and other harmful toxins coming in contact with your body and the environment; Choosing local not only means that you're supporting the local economy, but that goods purchased locally won't have to endure yet another trip across the country (or ocean) to get to you thereby minimizing fuel consumption.

Here at the treehouse, we're also big fans of practicality and reusability. Every day, it seems, a new product comes on the market to help you maximize the life of an item, and we LOVE this concept, for obvious reasons... It really just makes so much sense to be able to use a product more than once, and even better, for different applications!

One item that comes to mind is the Planet Wise Wet Bag. Also available as a wet/dry combo, these leak-proof bags are great for soiled diapers, wet clothing and swimsuits, making disposable sacks a thing of the past. All of these cute printed bags would be an asset to your baby/toddler gear arsenal, but I am partial to the combo because I always hated when the clean diapers and change of clothing got muffled up in the bottom of the diaper bag... A spot for clean, and a spot for dirty... Brilliant!

Another smart product is the Lifefactory Glass Bottle... We've sang its praises before because we love how glass washes and we love the way things taste out of glass versus plastic or even stainless steel. Glass is, and always has been, non-toxic... Interesting how things come full-circle.

Anyhow, Lifefactory has expanded their product line to offer child-sized flat-capped 9 oz. Beverage Bottles and well as colorful flat caps (available in a 4 pack) and and sippy caps (2 pack) to extend the life of existing Baby Bottles...

The 9 oz. size slips perfectly into the side drink compartment of Laptop Lunches' Bento Kit (also another product with amazing reusability... Kiss disposable sandwich and snack bags GOODBYE!) and works well to hold snacks on the go!

The 4oz. Bottle with the flat cap work great to hold (homemade?) baby food, snacks or in place of the (not-so-great, although still BPA-free) sport bottle that comes with Laptop Lunches' Bento System 2.0... The messenger strap on the Bento System is what makes it a great option!

With great design, sometimes comes a slightly higher price tag, but think of all of the money you will save not having to buy all new sippy cups and then all new water bottles when they grow out of the sippy cups. Consider how much less waste you will produce by using wet bag and/or a lunch box that does away with disposable snack bags and pricey juice boxes! Think of it as a long-term investment, on your wallet and the planet, because these products were made to go the distance!

We can't help but take it a little personally when people diss Columbia... Sure, we're not coastal like our sister to the East, Charleston. We're not as metropolitan like our friend to the North, Charlotte. We are our own city, and despite what people may say, we've got a a lot to offer! Nothing says hip like a Farmer's Market, and there's one in every neighborhood... We're partial to the All-Local, but has anyone had a chance to check out the new and improved State Farmer's Market yet? Not to mention, old favorites like EdVenture and Riverbanks Zoo that you can't find anywhere else... We take those for granted, don't we???

You may have to do a little legwork, but there is always something going on... A cultural festival, 5k charity runs and tons for the kiddos. Do you know about Hop Skip Jump? Our friend Ashley has taken all of the best things about Columbia... Things to do, things to see, places to shop and eat, that might be of interest to people with children, and compiled them into one spot. Genius! Ashley's goal is to to provide a resource for Columbia families and we think she's done a great job, so hop on over and check it out!

People are always asking us about yoga classes... We wish there was some place that offered a Mommy & Me class for toddlers, but we're totally down with some HOT YOGA until someone takes that idea and runs with it... Yoga Masala over in Rosewood (711 Bluff Road to be exact) is Columbia's first Hot Yoga Studio!

Hooray for designers who realize that big kids like to be kind to the Earth too! Spring has sprung in the treehouse!

We just received our Spring shipments from the fabulous Green Toys and Adooka Organics. Included are fun outdoor play things like gardening kits, jump ropes & beach toys, plus sweet sundresses & peasant tops for the girls and durable staples for the boys and rompers for the wee little ones... Both of these companies are Made in the USA, which you know we love, and here is part of the reason why...

When I decided to start Adooka (my son's first word, for duck - "uh-duck-ah") I knew I wanted it to be an eco-friendly company offering products made locally. After my son was born, I became concerned about what kind of country we would be in 20 years if we stop making things here. I saw an opportunity to create new jobs so that our children could (and hopefully will) grow up in a prosperous country with ample opportunities. My fabric knitting mill is just over the border in Canada, a single day's drive from my factories. I have two factories that I work with, one in Allentown, PA and one in Philadelphia. Allentown used to have a lot of garment factories, but one by one they are closing down as brands move their production offshore. My Allentown factory is old, experienced, and established, and my Philly factory is young, new, and run by an energetic and very organized mother-daughter team. At the Allentown factory I have been told by the sample maker, "Thank you for making these here, so we can keep our jobs." At the Philly factory, I see a family building a new business and, remarkably, most likely needing to expand in the coming years. It gives me hope for the future. What also gives me hope is seeing that

there is a demand for U.S.-made organic clothing... that some parents will seek out and support brands like mine, and choose products sewn by a fellow citizen that are better for our earth, despite the higher cost. Thank you!!

If you missed this morning's Hop Skip Chat, then you missed a great information session with Brooke Arnold Turner, a local photographer who offered these great tips on taking better photos of your children:

1. Get the right equipment, and take steps to learn how to shoot in "manual."

2. Use "low aperture" to isolate your subject.

3. Pay attention to the details, like your baby's feet for example.

4. Use natural light when possible.

5. Capture real, everyday moments.

6. Photograph interactions between your child(ren) with each other and loved ones.

7. Use a "wide angle" to capture the whole scene.

8. Find pretty light... And contrary to popular belief, it may not be on the sushiniest day!

9. Get creative with composition.

10. Have fun!!!

If a lot of this made sense to you, and you'd like to learn more, Brooke will be offering more in-depth learning sessions next month in conjunction with Hop Skip Jump... For this, you will need a DSLR camera, and you can register here.
